Phil Jones - 31/10/2008 |
Like many locations, LLantwit Major seems to benefit from scouring conditions to coax out the abundance of fossils contained. My first visit followed such conditons and was quite fruitful, but as my second didn't, the number of fossils found was greatly reduced. As a relative beginner to this fantastic hobby, I've rapidly learnt just how important the weather and tidal conditions are in helping to unearth fossils. |

Llantwit Major Visit - Phil Jones - Phil Jones |
Took a day trip along the coast from carboniferous Swansea to Llantwit Major in search of all things Jurassic. Following this web sites advice, I began by heading East from the cafe for approx 1/2 a mile or so. Amongst the fallen debris under the cliff face I found very little of note other than the ubiquitous Gryphea Arcuata, so I decided to change tactics and rummage amongst the foreshore boulders and rock pools. This proved a good choice as I soon found an ammonite, however it was too far imbedded into a large boulder to try and extract. I found the foreshore to the West of the Cafe the most productive, and soon spotted a genuinely superb, perfectly preserved, museum quality Gryphea Arcuata. This was followed, in quick succession, by 1/2 an ammonite in rather poor condition, and another three or four Gryphea. Sadly, I found no other forms of Fossil, but will be back very soon to try again. Llantwit is very easy to find, has a large and free car park, and has cafe and toilet facilities to boot. The beach isn't really family friendly as there is little sand, but this is more than made up for by the beauty of the cliffs and the (semi) abundance of fossils. Great day out, and I have 1/2 an ammonite !!! |
